In Peru it may be a question of being better off with a husband who's a dirtbag than not having a husband at all. Especially if you let someone disrespect you by stealing him away with no repercussions.
Yes, you're right. The more male-dominated a society, resulting in strict hierarchies and rigid social roles, the more likely it is that a woman would fight for even a shitheel of a man.
