The original Mai Tai is nothing like what you are served all over the Hawaiian islands. The only place I've found a REAL Mai Tai is at a little neighborhood spot on the eastern side of Oahu, near Kailua beach, called Buzz's. They make a KILLER Mai Tai. They even warn you that "it's not like typical Mai Tai's. There is no fruit juice in ours."
I said, "Bring me two!"
Unfortunately, on Maui I've had to put up with the orange/pineapple juice concoctions that pass for Mai Tais everywhere. Not bad. Just not great.
Some history of the drink can be
found here.
RECIPE
- 1 oz amber Martinique rum
- 1 oz dark Jamaican rum
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz orgeat syrup
- 1/2 oz of Cointreau
- garnish with mint (a lime if you like)
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, except the garnish. Shake
and strain into a rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with
fresh mint and a lime if you fancy that. You can also float some dark
rum on top of the cocktail.

Dolphins like a good Mai Tai, too. That's why they are always smiling!
Little known fact.

Nummers! I wants me it.
ReplyDeleteHey, Cheeze! I've been gone and haven't been blogging for the last week or so. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteAnd yes, NUMMERS! THIS is a real drink. Not the too sweet fruit juice concoction sold as a Mai Tai everywhere.
But it will put you on your tush.
Do I recognize the table-cloth and glassware? Was that taken at Mama's Fish House? Besides being phenomenally expensive (but good), they have a ~pretty good~ Mai-Tai. :-) I have to get my wife to drive the rental car back around the Island after I have a couple... Havn't been to Buzz's
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Yes, that was taken at Mama's. Yummy food, and the Mai Tai's are very good, but no one makes a Mai Tai like Buzz's on Oahu.
DeleteWe have that same table-cloth - my wife insisted. :-) We stayed on the North Shore when we went to Oahu (costco dael at Turtle Bay). It was kinda like visiting Sunnyvale if Sunnyvale was full of stoner surfers (which in large part it is)... ;-)

DeleteHAHAHAHA!
Buzz's is over on the eastern side. The beach there is Kailua and it has NO development, only private homes. You have to rent a home, but that is nice because the beach is awesome and EMPTY. The only downside is that room service is ME...MAYBE my husband, if I beg prettily.
